It has completely transformed the ground game from something you try to avoid to one of the best aspects of the fights. In U3 this has been simplified completely by asking you to either push the thumb stick up for a major transition (you move a lot) and down for a minor transition (you move a bit) with holding back being a defence against your opponents transition attempts. The problem is that your fighter never quite went in the direction you wanted and quite often just did nothing at all. To change ground position you had to move the thumb sticks on your pad in different patterns to make your fighter go where you wanted. In UFC 1 & 2 this part of the game always felt robotic and awkward due to the controls and animations being very uncompromising. For people not familiar with MMA the point of the competition is to beat your opponent by knock-out, stoppage, submission or on points using different variants of martial arts (hence Mixed Martial Arts) one of the fighting styles used is wrestling, not the fake kind that’s on Sky 1 on a Saturday morning but the actual grappling technique where the idea is to slam your opponent to the mat, gain a dominant position on them and then in MMA use ground and pound (beat the crap out of your opponent) until they can’t continue. One of the best examples of this is the wrestling aspect of the fighting. It feels tight and fluid where it used to feel stiff and clumsy. Most importantly the gameplay in UFC Undisputed 3 is the very best of the 3 games. Unlike their WWE stable mates the dev team has clearly spent the large gap between sequels fine tuning an already solid engine whilst introducing some new gameplay elements that make sure the experience feels fresh and fun.

So, how does Undisputed 3 compare to it predecessors? Is it a step forward for the series or have the developers spent 2 years twiddling their thumbs and getting tips from the WWE dev team on how to keep a franchise stale and boring whilst still making sure everyone buys it anyway? Well to be honest it’s a mixture of the two but thankfully more of a step forward then anything else.

It’s not that it was a terrible game but it felt like the series had already become a yearly cash cow much like Fifa or COD due to the complete lack of any real change to the gameplay, graphics or presentation.

The third game in the UFCs gaming franchise comes after a gap of 2 years when the sequel was released and almost undermined everything the first game accomplished.
